SSB depot Stuttgart

Location: Stuttgart/Germany

Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB) is the transport company of Stuttgart, the capital city of Baden-Württemberg. With 70 lines it is one of the largest local transport networks in Germany, and also one of the most advanced. The SSB has three depots, Stuttgart-Möhringen being the largest.

As part of the renovation of the depot lighting, metal halide lamps have been replaced by modern T8 fluorescent lamps. PC INDUSTRY ballasts from Tridonic ensure interruption-free operation. The depot has ten platforms, each 240 metres long. Every night, at the end of the working day, up to 60 trams are cleaned and inspected.

The trams are maintained in the workshop next door – parts are replaced and all the necessary repairs carried out. Some of these repairs involve precision engineering work, which is why an illuminance of 500 lx is required at the workplaces.

To guarantee the required system life and reliable operation even in the height of summer with temperatures of +45 °C under the roof, the ballasts used are the PC 1/58 INDUSTRY units from Tridonic that have been designed specifically to cope with the demands of harsh industrial environments. With a rated life of 100,000 hours at an ambient temperature of +60 °C, these ballasts can also withstand voltage peaks of up to 4 kV and offer high energy efficiency (class A2).

Optimum operation, minimum operating costs

The new lighting installation combines long life with high reliability and SSB plans to upgrade its other workshops in the same way. This will enable work to continue uninterrupted, extend maintenance intervals and minimise operating costs.
