One Raffles Quay

A wide range of Tridonic PC PRO ballasts are helping One Raffles Quay in Singapore minimise environmental impact and life cycle costs while delivering a high quality lit environment.

Located in the Raffles Place financial and business district of Singapore, One Raffles Quay comprises two office towers, providing 1.3 million square feet (120,774 square metres) of Grade A office space for banking and other financial corporations. The complex also incorporates a podium block, a hub car park and a subterranean retail mall which is linked to the Raffles Place MRT Station. Key elements of its design include an emphasis on sustainability at every level and a high level of workspace flexibility to accommodate organisations of different sizes.

A major consideration for the designers was to achieve the BCA Green Mark, a rating system for buildings, based on their sustainability performance. One Raffles Quay was also awarded the Prix d’Excellence in the “Office” category by The International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI).

Lighting for efficiency

Around 50,000 Tridonic PC PRO ballasts were supplied to the project, incorporated into a range of Thorn luminaires installed in both towers as well as the podium and linking corridor. Use of PC PRO ballasts has facilitated the creation of a sophisticated lighting management regime, reflecting the flexible workspaces that are available.

For example, office spaces vary in size from one to 200 workstations and are supported by meeting rooms, board rooms and seminar rooms – all of which need to be lit to accommodate the needs of each space. The use of high quality digital ballasts ensures that the lighting in each space can be controlled in relation to local requirements.

Lighting for low cost of ownership

The sheer size of the development and the range of spaces within it also dictated a design that would extend lamp life and reduce maintenance costs. A major benefit of the PC PRO fixed output ballasts is the enhanced lamp management delivered by the on-board xitec chip, which also reduces energy consumption.

A further benefit of the PC PRO fixed output ballasts is their unrivalled tolerance of voltage fluctuations. Consequently, the designed lighting levels are maintained under all conditions and the ballasts and lamps are protected from damage caused by over-voltages.

The importance of core components such as ballasts is often overlooked but in the case of One Raffles Quay the superior performance of the PC PRO ballast over conventional ballasts was recognised by the design team. As a result, the complex has a lighting system that delivers high energy efficiency with long lamp life, reduced maintenance costs and low environmental impact.

Technical note – lighting details

PC PRO ballasts and Thorn luminaires were used throughout the project in the following combinations:

  • Thorn Cinqueline luminaires with 4x14 W PC PRO
  • Thorn Cinqueline luminaires with 2x28 W PC PRO
  • Thorn Surf 2 with 1x36 W and 2x36 W PC PRO
